Like everything in the Subtle Spirits catalog, these bottles are made to be appreciated beyond what’s inside the glass. Each Volume is paired with a commissioned piece of artwork — the same philosophy that drives the Subtle Spirits Original line. Every Volume is limited.
Joshua Thinnes has spent 20 years and tens of thousands of hours tasting wines and spirits. What twenty years and thousands of tastings actually builds isn’t the best palate or a perfect palate — it’s the ability to walk others through the forest and help them develop and discover theirs. Joshua’s intention for this program has never been to cherry-pick every barrel and only choose what he deems the best of the best. He strives to guide people through the garden: learning what you respond to, what you’re reaching for, and helping you articulate it and find it among the living, breathing, ever-changing seasons of those barrels and the unique microclimate they are living in. Private Barrel Selections feature your logo integrated into the front label design and individual barrel specs handwritten on the back label.
Painted by Louisville, KY artist Jason Lois, this piece is one of two 4’ x 5’ canvases designed to stand alone or together. The collective piece(s) are titled “Self-Inflicted.” Jason’s work feels alive — layered, textured, and a little unruly, just like the best barrels. The piece pictured above accompanies the Volume 5 bourbon selections, and its partner, Volume 4, is showcased with the rye selections. Together the two pieces form one diptych image.
Tasting Notes:
Lush and smooth, punching above its weight class while drinking comfortably under proof. Old-school, porch-drinking bourbon. Sticky toffee pudding, pecan pie, and cured oak lead the way, with aromas of robusto tobacco leaf and brown sugar, and a chewy texture that lingers.
